USE TBHQ TO MAKE SHELF LIFE LONGER

Oxidation of Oils and fats is supposed to occur as a chain reaction.  This chain reaction can be arrested by addition of a small dosage of TBHQ whereby development of rancidity can be retarded.  Thus qualities like flavour, colour, odour and texture of food products like Edible oil, Butter, Confectionery, Milk Powder, Fried foodstuff,  can be saved from getting deteriorated.  

 

TBHQ is a more effective antioxidant than other antioxidants and their synergistic combinations.  It is a non-chelating antioxidant and does not give any objectionable colour in presence of metals like iron and copper.  TBHQ is lest volatile, hence its loss during frying and at higher temperatures is minimum, and effectiveness maximum.  It does not add any objectionable colour or odour to the product and is non-toxic and safe in use and can be easily incorporated into the products.  TBHQ is economic in cost as it is very effective at low concentrations.

 

Lower dosage requirement and high effectiveness make TBHQ the most economical modern day antioxidant.  It has better all round properties than all other antioxidants.  When added to edible oils like groundnut oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil, soyabean oil, safflower oil, corn oil, rice-barn oil, cottonseed oil, palm oil and rapeseed oil in small doses, it increases the stability by 4 to 7 times.  

 

It is an equally effective antioxidant for whole milk powder and confectionery products.  It is a good antioxidant for citrus oils like lemon oil and essential oils like pepermint oil.  TBHQ has excellent carry through stability at higher temperatures and therefore it is the most suited antioxidant for deep fried processed foods like potato chips and snack foods.  In poultry fat and in lard its effectiveness is 2 to 3 times more than other antioxidants.  Other popular applications of TBHQ include cosmetics, emulsifiers, flavouring materials and non-alcoholic beverages.
